    In line with Landcom’s commitment to improving the management of urban water quality, the third edition of Managing Urban Stormwater (MUS): Soils and Construction commonly referred to as the Blue Book has been revised.  The Blue Book is part of a series of documents produced by the NSW Government.  The fourth edition, March 2004 (reprinted July 2006) supersedes the third edition, August 1998.

    The revised Blue Book package includes:

    • Managing Urban Stormwater: Soils and Construction – Volume 1,4th Edition (reprinted July 2006; and
    • Planning for Erosion and Sediment Control on Single Residential Allotment - 1st Edition flyer provided on CD Rom.

    This new edition of the ‘Blue Book’ provides updated guidance for local councils and practitioners for the design, construction and implementation of measures to improve stormwater management, primarily erosion and sediment control, during the construction-phase of urban development. The document describes:

    • principles of soil and water management and an outline of the principle of ecologically sustainable development (ESD);
    • guidelines on identifying and addressing constraints and opportunities for soil and water management;
    • soil and water management aspects of the clearing of land, stripping and stockpiling of soil materials, and the management and reuse of topsoil for site rehabilitation;
    • practical erosion control information covering both sheet and concentrated water flow conditions;
    • information relating to the control of waste and sediment pollution from both water and wind;
    • soil conservation aspects for vegetative stabilisation of recently disturbed lands;
    • maintenance aspects of erosion and sediment control measures.

    As an environmental initiative the Blue Book is no longer available in hard copy.

    The hip pocket handbook – 1st Edition

    This durable field guide contains standard drawings and construction notes from the 4th edition of Soils and Construction, and is suitable for use as an on-site reference providing:

    • an overview of the basic principles of erosion and sediment control at urban development sites;
    • conceptual diagrams and specifications for the installation and maintenance of a range of erosion and sediment control measures, including water diversion structures, stockpiles and revegetation measures.

    Planning for Erosion and Sediment Control on Single Residential Allotments - 1st Edition
    (Managing Urban Storm Flyer).

    This brochure outlines the information to be contained in an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for a single residential allotment. Guidance is provided on how soil erosion and sediment pollution can be minimised on a single residential allotment, to help builders/developers who are required to prepare such a Plan and available by clicking here.

    Local councils are able to add respective names and logos onto the brochure, and print and distribute it free of charge to builders/developers using the CD-Rom.
